Exploring Black Texas History in the Digital Age

Remote Working
SWATH 2025, "Freedom @ Your Fingertips:  Exploring Black Texas History in the Digital Age," invites participants to join a five-week, hands-on virtual workshop that treats  (1) where to find (2) new ways to preserve, (3) how to interpret,  (4) creative ways to publish, and (5) fresh opportunities to explore Black history using AI and other digital tools.  Please see the tentative schedule below:

July 02:   Exploring Family History in Digital Archives: Guest Speaker, Kathy "Kanika" Marshall. Topic: "How YOU Can Leave a Written Legacy of Family History.” Included will be a short, hands-on exercise that will help attendees focus on a specific ancestor to help them get started on their genealogy path.

July 09:   Creating Family, Church, and Organizational Archives

July 16:   So, What Happened?:  Learning to Think Like a Historian in the Digital Age

July 23:  Blogging & Vlogging: Sharing History on Social Media

July 30:  Traveling Shoes:  Exploring Black History Everywhere!

Sessions will convene every Wednesday from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.  Each session will include a 40-minute presentation, 20-minute Q&A session, and an optional 30-minute breakout session.  Presentations will be available for viewing on the SWATH website within 72 hours of the workshop.  Registration is $25 per individual, $50 per family or group, and $100 per organization.

Participants are also welcome to join Saturday field trips with Freedom Tours Houston featuring historic Black sites in the Greater Houston Area.  Field trip dates are July 12, 19, and 26, 8:30 AM-12:30 PM.

Walking tours are $15 for children (17 and under), $20 for seniors (62+), and $25 for adults (18-61).

The bus tour is $55 for children, $65 for seniors, and $75 for adults. Transportation, water, and healthy snacks are included in all tours.

Do not miss this exciting 5-week experience!  Participants will learn and practice the four phases of historical production and be empowered to take charge of their rich histories and preserve them for generations to come.
